Finding a Therapist
Choosing a therapist can be a daunting task. After all, finding the “right” therapist can make a world of a difference in how safe and comfortable you feel with being vulnerable in your therapist’s presence, and, in turn, how much you stand to gain from therapy overall. So, how would you know if you and your therapist are a good match? It may be helpful to compare the process of finding a therapist to that of finding a new home. You may find photos of a seemingly “perfect” apartment, condo, or house online, but you’ll need to take a tour of the property to determine if the space feels like “home” to you.
Similarly, you’ll need to feel out your relationship with your therapist to determine if it’s a good fit for you. Some people are lucky enough to find a good match right away, while others may need to shop around a bit. I encourage you to talk with your therapist about how you feel during your sessions, and see how your therapist responds. Take notice of how you feel as a result of that exchange. Finally, trust your intuition. It’s there for a good reason. When you find the right match, you’ll know.
